“You will always be the sister of my soul, the friend of my heart.”
No, you are not seeing double! These are the Clark twins (as they are known in Carlisle, Kentucky) – better known at Baunta Apartments as Janice Vanlandingham and Louise Sherrod. Not only are Janice and Louise identical twins, but they are also mirror twins – one is left-handed and the other is right-handed.
Janice and Louise come from a family of 16 children, which includes an unprecedented four sets of twins. The sisters were the first set to be born in the family. Raised by their maternal grandparents, Janice and Louise have led interesting lives. Both graduated from old Henry Clay High School in Lexington. Both married and each had an only child – a daughter. Each sister named their daughters after the other; so Janice had a Louise and Louise had a Janice!
Fast forward to about 4 years ago, when Janice and Louise felt their health no longer enabled them to live completely independently. They knew they needed to downsize and so after about one year on the Baunta Apartments waiting list, two apartments became available at the same time. They each signed an apartment lease on April 21, 2014.
Both say it has been an adjustment to downsize from a single family residence to apartment living, but they enjoy all the convenient amenities and services available to them – especially the on-site beauty shop and the Café. They are both huge UK Wildcat fans and enjoy the excitement of game days with the other fans in the building.
Although they each have a separate apartment located just a few doors from each other, Janice spends the majority of the day in Louise’s apartment. That is, when they’re not in the Café having coffee or lunch with friends, playing Bingo or attending the free summer cookouts that are held monthly from May to September.
Both sisters say that they cannot imagine their lives without the other – especially as they age.
Janice says, “We love it here. It’s the best thing that ever happened to us!” And they are certainly two of the best things that have ever happened to Sayre Christian Village!
