About Sayre Healthcare Center
Established in 1986, Sayre Healthcare Center (a 130-bed Skilled Nursing Facility) has an outstanding reputation as a provider of long-term care. Situated in a quiet neighborhood on the south side of Lexington the Healthcare Center is a peaceful environment in which every effort is made to enhance the physical, social and spiritual well-being of the residents. The décor, including fully landscaped interior courtyards, enhances the relaxing and peaceful surroundings. Caregivers are caring and loving, who recognize individual needs and personalize the care to fit the individual while delivering the optimum in Skilled Nursing Care.
In addition to its traditional long term care services, the Center’s recent expansion provides for three additional specialty services:
- Our state-of-the-art orthopedic surgery rehabilitation center focuses on short-term rehabilitation, utilizing industry leading therapy equipment in one of two therapy gymnasiums in the building. Sayre has for many years partnered with Aegis Therapies to provide needed rehabilitative services to its residents. Aegis is a leader in the nation and has embraced the addition of this specialty service. The gymnasiums boast cutting-edge technology in implementing restorative treatment and in tracking progress for the physicians prescribing and monitoring care.
- As the population ages, dementia becomes more likely. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, one in eight people age 65 and older (13%) has Alzheimer’s disease. Nearly half of the people age 85 and older (45%) have Alzheimer’s disease. Sayre Healthcare Center’s “Reflection of Life Communities” are two small house living centers designed to provide holistic, loving care for patients with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. This concept of care has significantly enhanced the quality of life for these special residents and their families. The Reflection of Life care team has special, extensive training in providing dignified, loving care to the residents they serve.
- As the first of its kind in Kentucky, Sayre Healthcare Center offers its “Comfort Care Suites”, a private setting for residents who are nearing the end of life. It is a place where families can gather to be with their loved one in his/her final hours where privacy, dignity and peace are fostered.

As life expectancies increase, so also does the probability that Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia will occur in older adults. These diseases take a toll on those afflicted and place a heavy burden on the families who care for them.
Sayre Christian Village recognizes the need for a safe, peaceful, loving environment where residents with dementia may live with dignity. In Sayre Christian Village’s Reflection of Life Community, residents can maintain independence and freedom to enjoy their lives to the fullest extent possible.
The Reflection of Life Community introduces a unique concept of care for persons with dementia. The community supports a total of 41 large private rooms and utilizes the small house care method. Residents are cared for by highly trained staff who become part of the family. The caregivers treat each resident individually, focusing on their special needs. No “cookie cutter” approaches!
The Reflection of Life Community is patterned after a model developed by Jude Rabig, nationally known for providing care to older adults. She has been on-site at Sayre, helping us design, build, and furnish our “small houses”. She has personally instructed our staff in the intricacies of this type of loving care.
The self-contained small house is well-designed for easy usability by frail residents; it is organized and operated around the guiding principles of autonomy and dignity, and a home-like living environment is maximized. It is a joy to experience the peace and harmony that results from this approach.

The Healthcare Center has established three suites specifically designed for residents who are in the final days of their lives. The Comfort Care Suites provide a private room where a resident may be moved and where his/her loved ones may stay to comfort each other. Sayre Healthcare Center is the first Long Term Care community given special permission by the State to provide this additional level of care.
There are no special requirements – those in need have this special service available regardless of their payer status.

Sayre Healthcare Center’s Activities Program is as varied and as personalized as the individual needs of the up to 130 residents who call our facility home. A full calendar of daily activities is available for residents who can only participate in on-location events as well as special outings for those who are able to leave the Healthcare Center. Each resident’s participation is facilitated, through large and small groups and one-on-one contact from Sayre staff and volunteers.
Large passenger buses, outfitted with wheelchair lifts and stations, are available so that Sayre residents can enjoy outings. Recent trips have included a day at Keeneland, Lexington’s premier thoroughbred track; a visit to the Lexington Legend’s Baseball Park; and a trip to Cincinnati to see the Reds play baseball.
If a resident expresses a wish to do something, our award winning, dedicated Activities staff will pull out all the stops to make it happen!
Sayre Healthcare Center is fortunate and blessed to have approximately 150 caring individuals who give of their time to make life more meaningful for our residents. Whether it’s one-on-one fellowship or assisting with outings and group events, there is a special joy in giving and receiving.
At Sayre Healthcare Center, three well-balanced meals are served daily. Meals are served in the Café and in the main dining room. Residents may also choose to dine in their room. Guests are always welcome; meal tickets are available at the front desk for a small fee.
