'Be the Light' Night 2024

Transport Coordinator’s Driving Purpose

Tommy EvansAs Transportation Coordinator at Sayre Christian Village for 6 years, Tommy Evans’ job duties require him to schedule transportation appointments to therapy, doctor’s appointments and shopping.

Tommy drives residents all over Lexington, KY to some of the most stressful appointments of their lives.

“He lovingly gets his residents on the bus and immediately starts to soothe them with his soft voice and caring ways” reflected a staff member.

Because of amazing efforts on campus, he was recently nominated for the Community Living Award  from LeadingAge Kentucky.

“When I thought I couldn’t feel any lower, Tommy drove me to see my wife at the Nursing Home, and lifted my spirits. He somehow always knows the right thing to say to all of us in our various struggles.”

He has such a special way with people, it is as though his heart and mind is filled with light. He never rushes any of the residents.

As a regular resident rider remarked, “I don’t like to ask my kids because they rush me and get frustrated, but Tommy is so gentle…and funny too.”

Cartoonist with a Message of Hope

Tommy puts on a popular activity called “Snicker Doodles,” which includes his own live drawings of a scripture lesson. Elise Hinchman, our Marketing & Development Director says,

“Seeing his Snicker Doodles ministry was eye opening for me. How lucky are WE that he is on our campus. He is funny and endearing and he pulled it off flawlessly from memory, all while drawing these amazing cartoons. His mission is one of HOPE and that is a foundation of our mission. He wants all to know that there is hope for them and to lift them up out of what can be a depressing rut. He even packed up snicker doodle cookies and a personal drawing for each resident that came. It made me proud to work here.”

Tommy’s program is one of the most popular on the campus, delivering profound lessons with great insight and humor.

Tommy is always reliable, always on time, always respectful, always caring, and always patient. When asked what working at Sayre has taught him, he said:

“Working with seniors has taught me to be patient because nothing goes fast for seniors. Everyone is alike, no matter what age they are. The elderly want to laugh and have fun. They need someone to be attentive to their individual needs and sometimes they like getting into mischief. The life stories of the residents are so fascinating because they have been around so long and I love listening to them.”

“The challenges I face are striving to see Jesus in each and every resident. Mother Teresa once said,  ‘Here comes Jesus, in that annoying disguise” reflected Tommy.

It’s Not a Job, It’s a Mission

Tommy has been the beacon of light to all who come in contact with him. He has such a helpful attitude and humble way about him and he deserves the Community Living Award.
